LanXang Lab: Story to Screen A three-day workshop for Lao filmmakers supported by the US Embassy in Vientiane and presented in partnership with LanXang Shorts

At this free, three-day workshop you will meet other Lao filmmakers and receive guidance on developing short film stories and preparing these for production. This workshop is ideal for teams of two people (director and producer) working together on a short film project. During the day,  established regional film industry professionals will lead sessions guiding filmmakers and teams who want to:

  • develop your their story ideas; and
  • gain insight into what it takes to produce an outstanding short film.

Evening activities will include the Director’s Lounge, an informal space to meet with other filmmakers as well as film screenings with discussion.

Travel support is available for participants traveling from outside of Vientiane Capital.

ເງື່ອນໄຂຜູ້ສະຫມັກເຂົ້າຮ່ວມຝຶກອົບຮົມ l Qualifying Participants

  • ເຄີຍເຂົ້າຮ່ວມງານ Pitching ຂອງງານຮູບເງົາສັ້ນລ້ານຊ່າງມາກ່ອນ ຫຼື l Have participated in a LanXang Shorts Pitch competition, OR
  • ເຄີຍສ້າງຮູບເງົາສັ້ນສຳເລັດຢ່າງຫນ້ອຍ 1 ເລື່ອງ l Have worked on at least one completed short film project;

    ແລະ AND
  • ມີໂຄງການຮູບເງົາສັ້ນທີ່ກຳລັງເຮັດຢູ່ l Have a short film project idea;
  • ຍັງບໍ່ເຄີຍສ້າງຮູບເງົາຍາວມາກ່ອນ l Have not produced a feature film;
  • ຍັງບໍ່ເຄີຍສ້າງຮູບເງົາສັ້ນເກີນ 3 ເລື່ອງ ແລະ l Have not produced more than three short films; and,
  • ສາມາດເຂົ້າຮ່ວມຝຶກອົບຮົມໄດ້ທັງ 3 ມື້ l Are able to attend the three-day workshop.

Teams of two (director/producer or writer/director, e.g.) are encouraged to apply.

 

ຄູຝຶກຂອງພວກເຮົາ l Instructors

  • Supatcha Thipsena, also known as ‘Bow’, is a producer based in Bangkok, Thailand. She co-produced the feature documentaries Come and See  and School Town King, both of which premiered in competition in Busan in 2019–2020. School Town King also won 12 national awards, including Best Documentary at the Thailand National Film Association Awards, Best Picture at the Thai Film Director Awards, and Best Picture at the Bangkok Critics Assembly. In 2022, Supatcha co-produced a fiction feature, Blue Again, which premiered in competition in Busan. In the same year, she worked as an associate producer on The Trapped 13: How We Survived the Cave, Thailand’s first Netflix Original Documentary. In 2023, Supatcha worked as a delegate producer for a fiction feature, Doi Boy, which premiered in competition in Busan.
  • Komtouch Nappattaloong, or ‘Dew’, was previously the curator of films for the SAC Anthropology Center in Bangkok and producer of the 2019 Thai documentary Soil Without Land (Visions du Réel, Special Jury Prize at TIDF), and also served as the Lab Manager for SEAFIC. In addition, he directed the 2015 short film “Motherland” (LAAPFF, AustinFF, SalentoIFF, and Thai Short Film and Video Festival), made a Cuban short film “El Cielo” during the 2016 “Filming in Cuba with Abbas Kiarostami” workshop, and recently finished his first feature documentary, Hours of Ours.
  • Raymond Phathanavirangoon, co-founder of SEAFIC is an international film festival programmer who is currently an official delegate for Cannes Critics’ Week and programmer at the Bogota International Film Festival. He acted as a Reading Committee Member for the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) and was an advisory member of the Asian Film Awards (AFA). He recently worked as a producer for Thirteen Lives (2022), directed by Ron Howard.
  • Aditya Assarat of Purin Pictures is an award-winning film director and producer. His films include Hi-So and Wonderful Town. Aditya is also the producer of many Thai independent films including Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, which premiered at Venice and screened at the Luang Prabang Film Festival in 2017.  He recently produced and co-directed Ten Years Thailand, which premiered at Cannes.  Aditya is the recipient of the national Silpathorn Award, given annually to an individual for contributions to Thai cinema.
