Butet is an activist working at a conservation organisation in Jambi, teaching literacy and mathematics to the children of an indigenous tribe in the upstream area of the Makekal River. When a boy from a community living downstream saves her, Butet decides to expand her jungle school. But she must contend with opposition: the indigenous tribe believes that learning will cause disasters in their village. Based on a true story from Butet Manurung’s memoirs, The Jungle School presents a powerful message amidst a backdrop of Indonesia’s beautiful landscapes and people.
