Hoang, Thanh, Thang, and Long, four students of Hanoi University, joined the army in 1971 during fierce war against the Americans. These recruits took part in a crash training course commanded by Captain Phong. Right afterward, they were sent to the most violent battlefield – the Quang Tri ancient citadel. Thanh, Thang and Long, died in those fierce fights. Only Hoang was fortunate to survive until the Victory Day April 30th 1975. The film is Hoang’s memory of about 81 days and nights under unceasing bombs and shells at Quang Tri citadel and Thach Han river – the fighting zone that is so notorious as the “mortar of human flesh” in Vietnam war time.
