American Film Showcase Workshops
The American Film Showcase brings award-winning contemporary American documentaries, independent fiction films, and documentary know-how to audiences around the world, offering a view of American society and culture as seen by independent filmmakers. The Showcase highlights the value of film in fostering understanding and cooperation, dialogue and debate.
2019 Animation Storytelling Workshop: Regional Animation Workshop
The American Film Showcase (AFS), in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Vientiane and the Luang Prabang Film Festival (LPFF), hosted a six-day animation workshop on December 7-13, 2019.
Through trainings focused on story and pitch development for animated feature films, 15 animators from ASEAN countries enhanced their skills through master classes with Academy Award®-winning producer Aron Warner (Shrek, Shrek 2, Book of Life) and Academy Award®-nominated visual effects coordinator Carlos Arguello (The Chronicles of Narnia, Batman and Robin, The Devil’s Advocate).
Working out of the UNESCO World Heritage building of the Le Calao restaurant, the selected animators spent five days workshopping their feature film ideas. The program culminated with a final pitch, in which participants presented materials they developed during the week–film treatment, synopsis, character & world images–to a panel of distinguished industry professionals.

2018 Animation Storytelling Workshop: Feature Film Story and Pitch Development
The American Film Showcase (AFS), in collaboration with U.S. Embassy Vientiane and the Luang Prabang Film Festival (LPFF), hosted a six-day animation workshop on December 7-12, 2018.
Through trainings focused on story and pitch development for animated feature film, 12 animators from ASEAN member states had the chance to develop their skills in a master class with Academy Award®-winning producer Aron Warner (Shrek, Shrek 2, Book of Life) and visual development artist Arthur Fong (The Croods, Kung Fu Panda 3).
In this scenic UNESCO World Heritage site, teams of writer/directors and artists (illustrators, concept artists, designers), in addition to character designers, spent five days workshopping their animated feature film ideas. The program culminated with a final pitch, in which participants presented materials they developed during the week, including a film treatment, synopsis, character images, and world images.
2017 American Film Showcase US-ASEAN Documentary Workshop
On 7-13 December 2017, the American Film Showcase together with U.S. MIssion to ASEAN, and in collaboration with the Luang Prabang Film Festival, hosted 14 emerging documentary filmmakers from the Young Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative (YSEALI) network for a workshop focused on short docmuentary film production. The participants, coming from all ten ASEAN member states, traveled to Luang Prabang to develop short documentaries with the support of American Film experts Ramona Diaz and Patrick Shen.
